Amusing Mathematics makes math fun!
I’m not a math whiz, and as a homeschooling mom, this could be a detriment. In fact, I’m always on the prowl for ways to make math fun for my kids. Oh how I wish someone would have tried to make math fun when I was in school! Maybe I wouldn’t dislike it so much today. . . but that’s another story.
I downloaded “Amusing Mathematics” - an e-book module from The Old Schoolhouse Magazine’s online store - www.theoldschoolhousestore.com recently. I was hoping it would help me present some math learning in a fun and creative way to my three chitlins (as I call my sweet kiddos) and I wasn’t disappointed.
The module is designed to accompany the much larger and more comprehensive mega-resource, The Schoolhouse Planner (which I have and love!), but is a complete study by itself.
My two oldest (9 and 11) had fun working on a sudoku from the module - TOGETHER - the other day and my youngest (age 7) enjoyed coloring, cutting out and playing with a tanagram. She got pretty creative with putting those shapes together!
There is plenty more in the module for us to do during our regular lessons including coloring pages, math riddles and jokes and copy work that sneaks in a little language and handwriting skill here and there (just like hiding the peas in the mashed potatoes!).
At a price of $7.95, the module - which downloads as a PDF - is worth it. It’s cheaper than most other unit studies you can buy and it’s not so large as to be overhwelming.
The Old Schoolhouse Store offers a new download each month and Amusing Mathematics is the November module. A couple of past module subjects included music and musical instruments and inventors, so now I can’t wait to see what they’ve got planned for December!
Check out the website - www.theoldschoolhousestore.com for more great learning tools and deals (and if you sign up for their email list you’ll be privy to even more great deals and freebies!). It’ll be worth your time.
