Book review: The Missing Link: Found
The Missing Link: Found
I started reading this as an out-loud bedtime story (I usually read chapter books to my three chitlins, like Nancy Drew) but my two younger ones lost interest pretty quick.
The book is actually aimed at teens - the 11 or 12 and up - so I turned it over to my 11-year-old son, K-Oz.
K-Oz finished the book within a day and a half and loved it.
So, for my review of the book I decided to interview K-Oz about his likes and dislikes and impressions of the book.
MOM: So K-Oz, what did you like most about this book?
K-OZ: Well, actually there were a lot of things I liked. Let me think and narrow it down to one thing. I mostly liked it because it had a lot of mystery in it and I just sorta like to read mystery books. And I really liked it.
MOM: Would you recommend this book to other kids your age or older?
K-OZ: (Nods head) Uh-huh.
MOM: Did you learn anything new or interesting while reading The Missing Link: Found
K-OZ: Sort of yeah. A few things.
MOM: Like what?
K-OZ: Well it had a few things about geology and stuff and fossilization and things.
MOM: Would you like to read the other books in this series?
K-OZ: (enthusiastically - with a thumbs-up) You bet!
MOM: Did you know that The Missing Link: Found was written by a girl who was homeschooled?
K-OZ: No.
MOM: Did you like the fact that the kids in the story were home schooled?
K-OZ: Yeah, it gives it a better plot!
My son really enjoyed this book and he liked the science included in it. The story centers upon two teenagers who are homeschooled - a brother and sister. Their father is an archaeologist-turned-photographer and the whole family travels with Dad for his assignments. Mom and little brother stay home for this assignment - which is to help out a relative with an archaeological dig.
There is a great deal of positive discussion about Creation versus evolution which spurred discussion in our home (we are Creationists).
The Missing Link: Found was written by Christina Gerwitz and her mother Felice Ferwitz. Christina was 12 when she started writing the book.
The book - and the other two in the series (Dinosaur Quest at Diamond Park and Key to the Past: Unlocked) can be ordered through the Gerwitz’s website, www.mediaangels.com . They are currently running a special for the three-book series - $22.00. If you look over the website, you’ll see some other interesting things like “Creation Camp in a Box” - a way to provide a Creation unit study in a fun way, as well as other science lab materials and online Creation classes.
So check it out!
